The 2026 J.D. Power EV App Satisfaction Study found app satisfaction jumped to 7.7/10 (from 6.1 in 2025 and 5.5 in 2024) while app "churn" fell to a record-low 4.5% — EV owners are engaged and asking for more useful features (36% want more features, the top request). Meanwhile buyer-survey data shows the EV decision is still gated by anxiety, not appetite: range, charging location, incentives, home-charging logistics and cost misconceptions. Every hesitation below is a free-to-build utility that captures high-intent traffic.

EV price parity is shifting and used listings are opaque. A checker that scores a listing against market benchmarks ("fair", "good deal", "overpriced") by model/year/trim/km gives buyers negotiating power and captures the single highest-intent moment in the funnel.
32% of shoppers are interested in leasing — tech-obsolescence fear makes leases attractive for EVs. A transparent lease-vs-buy model (residual, rate, incentives pass-through, exit at 3–5 yrs) answers the finance question buyers won't trust dealerships to answer.
The best "free API" play on the list: NHTSA vPIC is free with no key — decode any VIN to verified spec fields and recall status. It's the diligence layer used-EV buyers want (and dealers won't volunteer), and it's the highest-trust utility you can ship in a weekend.
EV insurance premiums and repair costs run higher in early data — the #1 "nobody told me" cost. A budget estimator (insurance by model, charging, maintenance, winter tires, depreciation) removes post-purchase shock and captures insurance-intent leads worth real money.
55% of non-Tesla EV app users are frequent users and churn is at a record low — owners want to see their savings. A no-backend tracker (localStorage) logs every charge and shows "$ saved vs gas this month" — the "aha" feature that keeps owners engaged and makes them advocates.
60% of buyers hit home-charging install complexity at the dealership. A planner (garage vs street, 120V vs 240V, panel capacity, charger pick) that estimates the real all-in cost — and routes to vetted electricians — solves the post-purchase logistics problem with the most valuable lead in the funnel.
63% of consumers wrongly believe EVs cost more to maintain — a maintenance-schedule tool (tire rotation, cabin filter, brake checks, battery care) corrects that and builds trust. Paired with recall alerts (Transport Canada/NHTSA feeds), it's the retention layer every owner needs.

These are "utility apps for consumers" with a supplier-facing revenue engine: the consumer gets a genuinely useful free tool, and the supplier side (dealers, insurers, lenders, electricians, charge networks) pays for qualified intent from a high-ticket transaction. The two-sided design is what makes each tool lucrative, not the tool itself.
